Entries can be submitted directly by interested scientists or by third parties wishing to propose a scientists or team of scientists to win the award in any of the three prize categories.
Applicants/proposers were requested to provide the following:
- Contact details of the applicant or proposer including: academic title, family name, first name, organization, postal address, telephone, fax and E-mail;
- Title of scientific work and brief summary of application including abstract of the work in the form of a short description of approximately 300 words.
- Indication of one or more of the three categories of the IDF Elie Metchnikoff Prize 2007 (microbiology, biotechnology, nutrition and health) to which the entry relates to;
- Detailed description of discovery and/or novel development of technology, description of work in the form of extended abstract not exceeding 10 pages comprising:
- The subject title of the work
- The name(s) of the author(s)
- The main text
The description should reflect the basic subject of the work, the research results relevant to the chosen category (not less 2/3 of the text) as well as to the adjacent categories, if appropriate, (not exceeding 1/3 of the text), show realization of the results and the perspective of their future use. The emphasis should be on contribution of the discovery to science and/or industrial and consumer needs.
- A bibliography of literature references relating to the discovery. Numerical references should be part of the extended abstracts.

With a deadline of 31 January 2007.
The IDF Technical Director will verify that the information contained in each of the entries is complete prior to forwarding all entries to the five members of the Award Expert Panel.
The Award Expert Panel will evaluate entries according to the following criteria:
- Impact of the discovery in terms of contribution to science and/or industrial needs,
- Impact factor of the journal in which the work was published and/or its citation,
- Keynote presentations at international conferences in relation to the discovery,
- Products on the market arising from the discovery.
Each member of the Award Expert Panel will then recommend up to maximum three entries per category with a brief evaluation report for review and decision on the winners by the Award Committee:
The Award Committee will take its decisions on the winning entry in each category in March 2007. The winners will be notified by the IDF Technical Director at the beginning of April 2007. They will be officially announced at a special award session in the afternoon following the first IDF Regional Conference on Fermented Milks - Technology and Nutrition in Moscow on 17 May 2007.
The winners in each category will be asked to deliver an oral presentation and a poster for display at the event.
